《人間は自然を如何に見るのか？》

「表現以前の造形」を問題にした画家・TOJU（1953-2021）。

その平面・立体作品の数々は、完成された”作品”であると同時に、常に生成の過程に在り続けました。アーカイブは意味を更新しながら名づけ直され、作家自身によって密やかに葬られた作品群も少なくありません。

本展では、未完の作品構想を含む晩年の研究資料、独自の造形思考によって綴られた『阿吽山水』ノート、そして他に類を見ないコスモグラフィカルな画法を通して、孤高の画家の知られざる創造現場を開示します。

“How Do Humans Perceive Nature?”

TOJU (1953–2021) was a painter who explored the concept of “form prior to expression.”

His numerous two-dimensional and three-dimensional works were, while standing as completed “artworks,” simultaneously in a constant state of becoming. Many of these works were renamed as their meanings evolved, and quite a few were quietly retired by the artist himself.

Through research materials from his later years—including unfinished conceptual sketches—the “A HUM SAN SUI”notebooks, which chronicle his unique approach to form, and his unparalleled cosmographic painting technique, this exhibition reveals the unknown creative process of this solitary painter.

1953-2021
本名・鯨井久樹。埼玉県熊谷市生まれ。東京で育つ。1976年より仙台を拠点に制作。

「行為することなしに行為する」、「愛に技術は必要か」、「自然は鏡である」といった言葉を、自身の表現と存在そのものに関わる生きた「問い」として持ち続けた。

1979年より仙台、ドルナッハ、パリ、ニューヨーク、東京にて個展。1995年に仙台でubusuna美術研究会を結成し、2002年まで活動。2005年より中国北宋・南宋時代絵画の「気」と造形技術工程を「生命宇宙的自己実現」の方法と捉えて、絹本模写と造形思考によって研究を深める。

竜の口渓谷でのパフォーマンス、天然自然の中での内実的実験行為、インスタレーション、またオイリュトミーやCORVUSとのコラボレーションなど多様な試みをとうして、一貫して《人間は自然を如何に見るのか》という表現以前の造形の問題をまなざした。

 

 

TOJU (Painter)
1953–2021

Born Hisaki Kujirai in Kumagaya, Saitama, and raised in Tokyo. From 1976 onward, he based his artistic practice in Sendai.

The words “To act without acting,” “Does love need technique?,” and “Nature is a mirror” remained living questions for him, concerning both his artistic expression and his very existence.

From 1979 onward, he held solo exhibitions in Sendai, Dornach, Paris, New York, and Tokyo. In 1995, he founded the “UBUSUNA” ARTS RESEARCH GROUP in Sendai, which remained active until 2002. From 2005 onward, he regarded the qi and the technical processes of form-making in Chinese painting of the Northern and Southern Song dynasties as a means of “self-realization within the living cosmos,” deepening his research through the copying of paintings on silk and zōkei shikō (“formative thinking”).

Through a wide range of experiments—including performances in Tatsunokuchi Glen, “The Action for Mental Experiment” in natural settings, installations, and collaborations involving eurythmy and with CORVUS—he consistently kept his gaze on the problem of “Forming Before Expressing Oneself,” centered on the question: “How does the human being see nature?”
