● About Celestial Notes
──────────────

Celestial Notes is a new stage work by Kentaro KUJIRAI, centered on expression through dance and voice.

Sendai is a city with a rich history of astronomy and calendrical science dating back to the early modern period.

How have human beings perceived the heavens, and how have they connected them to the seasons, the land, society, and the body?

Taking Sendai as one point of departure, the work unravels astronomical traditions across time and cultures, together with the cosmologies that lie at their roots, and re-examines the relationship between human beings and the heavens through body, voice, and sound.

──────────────
● About the Butoh Series
──────────────

A continuing project in which Kentaro KUJIRAI takes as a point of departure the “questions” that have emerged from his own practice and from his encounters with diverse forms of Butoh, and asks anew what BUTOH can be through the body of the present.

The first work, U-BU-SU-NA, began with ubusuna — one’s native land and the presence bound to it — and journeyed through the depths of land and body, and through memories that fall outside History with a capital H.

The second work, Celestial Notes, turns its gaze toward the heavens. Asking how human beings have perceived the sky and forged relationships between heaven and earth, the work searches for where the heavens might be found in the future.

At a time when the evolution of generative AI and humanoids is unsettling the very definition of the subject itself, the work responds from Sendai toward a world now taking new form.
